Final Assembly Pacific Island Style!

Our Final Assembly and Prizegiving presentation for 2012 was a drum routine by the boys and a dance by the girls, traditional Rarotongan style. We designed and made our whole costume ourselves. We used crepe paper, elastic, staples, sewing needles and thread. First we had to research what the traditional costumes for boys and girls were, then we needed to plan our colour scheme and order our materials. Finally, we needed to make each item of our costumes. The girls wore an orchid in their hair, a skirt, and a lei. The boys wore a lei, a skirt, and leggings. We also had to research a traditional dance which the girls had to learn off by heart. The boys had to learn a drum routine which Ms Reader put together for us. Here is a slideshow of us rehearsing in our classroom before we went down to the hall to perform.

Last Day in Kereru for 2012

Kereru have worked very hard all year - and on the last day of school Ms Reader let us plan a class party! We dug our potatoes up that we grew in our garden and after Ms Reader cooked them and let them go cold, we cut them up and fried them in lots of electric frying pans with a little bit of butter. They were mmm...mmm...yummy! We ate them with salad and cheerios. We also had ice cream with chocolate hail and sprinkles. Before our shared lunch, we played party games which we chose ourselves. These were eating chocolate with a knife and fork, pass the parcel, and eating chocolate cake with our hands behinds our backs. Then we went horse racing in the afternoon. Here are some photos from our super fun last day!

Kereru Makes Wire Birds!

In Term 4, Kereru made 3-D birds from wire. We used two different gauges of wire - a heavy gauge to make the structural parts of our bird, and a lighter gauge wire to 'wrap' the structural parts and to add details such as feathers and wings. We needed to use pliers to twist the wire and to join bits of wire together. Here we are making our birds.

Kereru's Fantastic Wire Birds

Once we had made our wire birds, we took them down to the hall and displayed them for everyone to see at our Final School Assembly and Prizegiving. They looked great! We got lots of really good comments about them.

Here is our display at the hall.

Making Moon Habitats

In Term 4, Kereru and Toroa worked together in House Teams to make the best moon habitat that they could. We had lots of newspaper to use, scissors and tape. First we brainstormed ideas in our team and then we had the rest of the two hours to make our habitat. We had to make sure that our structure was big enough to fit a person inside. Here are some of our moon habitats!
