Welcome to Term 4!

Wow! What a busy start we have all had to Term 4. We have had Pet Day at Chertsey, Athletics Day at Rakaia School, and Life Education (Harold) and Athletics Counties are coming up in week 4.

In Kereru we have been reading about Akana Jimmy from Agweo, a small village in Africa. Jimmy's village had no running water until a 5-year-old Canadian boy, Ryan, raised enough money to build a well. Kereru have been learning about what Jimmy's life was like without clean healthy water to drink and how his life, and that of the whole village, was changed when the new well was built. Ask them to tell you about this story . . . they have been fascinated by it!

Marooned           by Howard Pyle

Kereru are looking at descriptive writing this term and soon we will be writing our own descriptions of one of our toys. We have been practising our descriptive writing skills by writing pirate stories about a marooned pirate. We have used this painting  for our inspiration, and have enjoyed making up reasons for why this pirate was thrown off his ship and marooned on a deserted island!

In maths, Kereru are learning about fractions and using our multiplication and division knowledge from Term 3. We have been playing games, such as Fraction Bingo and Loopy Fractions, and have also cut up playdough and drawn pictures to represent different fractions. We are learning how to write fraction symbols and which numbers are used for halves, thirds and quarters.
